Start With The Street, Not The Switchboard
If the whole street is dark, the fault sits on the network and no electrician can restore your supply. Check your electricity distributor’s outage map, or ring the faults and emergencies number printed on your power bill. If your neighbours have lights and you don’t, check whether the safety switch at your own board has tripped and reset it, and if it won’t reset, that is our work. Our phones are answered 24 hours a day, emergency calls get priority, and we aim for same-day or next-day attendance where possible. Call Josh on 0431 663 251 or Corey on 0407 814 821.
If you’ve just typed 24 hour electrician gold coast no power into your phone by torchlight, that street check is worth the thirty seconds it takes. GreenGrid Electrical works across Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Logan, Ipswich and Redlands, with Corey based down the Gold Coast end and Josh out towards Ipswich. Suburb not listed? Just ask us.
Our Emergency Electrician work covers the property side of the meter. If what’s happening at your place isn’t on this list, tell us anyway when you call.
- Total Loss Of Power: the main switch is off or won’t hold, and nothing in the property is live.
- Safety Switch Failure: the switch trips repeatedly, refuses to move, or stays up while circuits remain dead.
- Blown Fuses: common on older boards that still use fuse carriers rather than circuit breakers.
- Electrical Fires, Burning Smells Or Sparking: anything scorched, hot or arcing at a board, power point or light fitting.
- Electrical Surges: usually after a storm, and enough current to overheat an appliance or its wiring and cut that circuit.
- Water-Damaged Wiring: roof leaks, flooding and wind-driven rain getting into fittings or the board itself.
Three Checks Before You Call Anyone

Three answers tell you most of what an electrician would ask on the phone: whether the neighbours have power, whether the whole property is out or only part of it, and what the safety switch does when you push it back up.
| What You Can See At Your Place | What It Points To | What To Do Next |
| Street lights and neighbours also out | A network outage upstream of your property | Your distributor’s faults line, not an electrician |
| Your property dead, neighbours lit | Often a safety switch tripped at your own board | Reset it once, and call us if it won’t reset |
| Some rooms or power points dead, the rest fine | One circuit or one safety switch, not the whole supply | Run the appliance test below before booking anyone |
| Safety switch trips the moment you reset it | A fault still live on that circuit | Leave it off, leave that circuit alone, call us |
| Lights dim or flicker everywhere at once | A hazard your distributor needs to hear about now | Don’t touch the switchboard, turn off accessible power points, call your distributor |
| Burning smell, buzzing or scorch marks | A live hazard rather than a nuisance trip | Switch off at the main only if you can reach it safely, then call |
A safety switch that trips for no apparent reason can be caused by an overloaded circuit or by faulty electrical equipment or wiring, and you can often narrow it down yourself. Unplug everything on the dead circuits, including the things nobody thinks of, such as the fridge, the outdoor pump and anything on a garden power point. Reset the switch. If it holds, plug appliances back in and switch them on one item at a time, giving a fridge or air conditioner a little time before you switch it back on. The last one you switched on before it tripped may be the cause, and that appliance stays unplugged until it is repaired or replaced.
Safety Warning: These checks stop at the switches on the front of the board. Don’t remove a cover, don’t pull a fuse carrier apart, and don’t touch wiring that is damaged, scorched or wet. It is illegal to perform electrical work in Queensland without an electrical work licence under the Electrical Safety Act 2002.
If the switch won’t hold with everything unplugged, or the board has no safety switches at all, the board is the next thing to look at. The Electrical Safety Office sets out that Queensland law requires safety switch protection on domestic circuits, with installation obligations triggered when properties are built, sold or leased, or when electrical work is done. Our guide on how to check if your electrical switches and switchboards need replacement covers what to look for in daylight.
Solar Homes Go Dark With Everyone Else
A grid-connected solar system is not a backup supply. The inverter shuts down when it detects the outage, which stops your panels feeding a grid that technicians may be working on, so the array can be in full sun with the house completely dead. Only a battery designed for backup keeps anything alive, and depending on its type, size and set-up that may be the whole property or only selected circuits such as lighting or refrigeration.
If the inverter screen shows a fault or goes blank during an outage, that is expected behaviour rather than a reason to call anyone out. Give it a few minutes after street power returns, and if it still hasn’t come back, how to check if your solar panels need replacement is the place to start.
What We Do When We Get There
The job on the night is to find the fault, make it safe, and give you back as much power as can safely be restored.
- 1. Assessment: we go through what you saw, when it started, and what has already been switched off or unplugged.
- 2. Isolate And Test: the supply is isolated and circuits are tested one at a time until the faulty one is identified.
- 3. Stabilise Or Repair: where the full fix isn’t immediately possible, we isolate the danger, make temporary repairs and give you options to complete the work safely.
- 4. Testing And Safety Checks: whatever is put back into service is tested before we leave, and you get told plainly what is live and what is still off.
Where the repair counts as electrical installation work, the contractor must test the installation and give you a certificate of testing and compliance certifying compliance with the Wiring Rules, with a copy kept for five years (Electrical Safety Office). Ask for it and keep it. “Josh and his team are amazing. They have helped me out many times even after hours. Great pricing and top notch work,” wrote Anita Maxwell.
What It Costs And Who Is Licensed
A search for 24 hour electrician gold coast no power will not turn up a price, and we don’t publish one either, because a tripped appliance circuit and a burnt-out main board are not the same job. What we do commit to is a free quote, transparent upfront pricing with no hidden costs, a fixed price agreed before we start, and any after-hours or holiday surcharge disclosed before work begins. Call either number and tell us three things: whether the neighbours have power, what the safety switch does, and roughly how old the property is.
Whatever we install is covered by our workmanship guarantee and by the manufacturer’s warranty on the unit, and anything that turns out to be planned work rather than an emergency gets quoted the same way through our Domestic Electrical Services.
In Queensland, a business that performs or advertises electrical work must hold a current electrical contractor licence with a nominated qualified technical person (Electrical Safety Office). Ours is Queensland electrical licence 1501553, and it is worth knowing the number before you let someone open a switchboard at midnight.
The licence carries protections that a handyman rate never does. Licensed electrical contractors in Queensland must hold at least $5 million public liability insurance including a $50,000 consumer protection component, under the Electrical Safety Regulation 2013, as the Electrical Safety Office sets out. All our electricians are fully licensed, qualified, and insured.
Frequently Asked Questions
Powered Medical Equipment And Food In The Fridge

Tell us when you call if someone in the property relies on powered medical equipment, so we know what we are dealing with before we arrive. Emergency calls are prioritised, and we aim for same-day or next-day service where possible. Keep the fridge and freezer shut in the meantime.
Power Is Back But Some Things Still Aren’t
Check the board for a tripped breaker or safety switch before you write off an appliance, then run the one-at-a-time test above. If a circuit stays dead with nothing plugged into it, or there is scorching around a power point, that is a repair rather than a reset, and it is worth booking through our emergency electrical service even though the lights are back on.
Overnight Help For A Business
The same 24-hour emergency scope applies to commercial sites, and follow-up work can be scheduled after hours or on weekends so trading isn’t disrupted. Occupiers of Queensland commercial buildings must also maintain their fire safety installations, including emergency and exit lighting, and provide an annual occupier’s statement under the Building Fire Safety Regulation 2008. Installing, testing and maintaining that lighting is work we take on through Commercial Electrical Services, for offices, retail stores, warehouses, hospitality venues and schools. “I am a local builder to the Gold Coast and Brisbane region. I use green grid for all my projects,” wrote michael jadric.
Renters And Who Arranges The Repair
Ring your property manager or lessor first, and tell them whether the neighbours have power. If there is a live hazard, such as scorching, a burning smell or a safety switch that won’t hold, say so plainly, because that is an emergency rather than a routine maintenance request. Whoever ends up arranging the work, the same 24-hour numbers apply and the price is agreed with them before we start.
