Smoke Alarms: What You Need to Know to Stay Safe

Few devices around your home are more critical than the humble smoke alarm. When something goes wrong, even as simple as a smouldering mattress or a short circuit, a functioning smoke alarm can provide the early warning that saves lives. Yet many homes have alarms that are old, poorly installed, or even non-compliant.

1. Choose the Right Type

Modern standards often require photoelectric smoke alarms (rather than ionisation types) because they detect smoulder-type smoke more reliably and reduce false alarms from cooking or steam. Many jurisdictions require alarms to meet a standard (for example, AS 3786 in Australia) to ensure sensitivity, durability, and safety.

2. Power Source & Interconnection

In newer homes or renovations, alarms usually must be hard-wired (mains) with battery backup.
In older buildings or where wiring is impractical, sealed 10-year lithium battery alarms are often acceptable.
When more than one alarm is present, they should be interconnected so that if one detects smoke, all alarms in the property sound simultaneously. This maximises the chance of waking occupants, no matter where they are.

3. Where to Install

One on every level of your home (basement, ground floor, upper floors).
In hallways or passages connecting bedrooms to the rest of the home.
Inside or just outside bedrooms so occupants hear alarms from sleep.
Avoid placing alarms too close to kitchens, bathrooms, or ventilation fans (steam, cooking fumes, or drafts can trigger nuisance alarms or delay detection).
Avoid “dead air” zones (corners, wall/ceiling junctions), place the alarm at least 300 mm from walls or corners (or as recommended in local code).

Maintenance & Lifespan

Test monthly: Press the test button and listen for the full loud beep.
Clean regularly: Every 3–6 months, vacuum or gently dust the alarm’s vents to remove dust, cobwebs, insects, or debris.
Replace batteries (if not sealed) at least once a year, or when the alarm chirps.
Replace the unit every 10 years: Over time, sensors degrade and may no longer detect smoke reliably. Always check the manufacture/expiry date.
Whenever there is a fault, chirp, or after a building renovation, retest or replace immediately.
